A San Marcos motorcyclist who collided with an SUV in the early morning of July 27 has been identified. The 30-year-old man was thrown from his vehicle after being broadsided by a Toyota 4Runner and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, who attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter, was charged with felony hit and run, gross vehicular manslaughter, and felony driving under the influence.
While all drivers are responsible for sharing the road conscientiously and safely, there are a number of precautions motorcyclists can take to ensure their safety and prevent accidents. Most basically, wearing a helmet and protective clothing can help to reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision. Riding in comfort can also help you maintain the concentration necessary to ride safely. Adjustments to the seat, handlebars, backrest and foot controls may make a difference in your comfort level.
It is also important to be aware of hazards on the road. Being conscious of your fellow motorists, obeying posted speed limits and other traffic signs, and eliminating unnecessary distractions can keep you more alert to your surroundings. Paying extra attention in construction zones is also a must, due to debris, lane closures, sudden stoppages and the presence of workers.
In addition, although there may be periods in which you aren’t riding very often, it’s important to keep your motorcycle up to date on repairs and upgrades. Connect with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts by joining a local organization, planning a group trip or participating in community events. Finally, remember to always maintain insurance on your motorcycle — no amount of preparedness will automatically prevent you from being involved in an accident.
