A motorcyclist sustained serious injuries in an accident in Mission Valley. The accident occurred on Friday, February 27 in the early morning hours.
According to police officers, the motorcyclist was heading south on Texas Stress toward the eastbound Interstate 8 freeway. Another motorist failed to spot the biker and nearly collided with him. To avoid the collision, the motorcyclist sped up at the last second. Unfortunately, this caused the motorcycle driver to lose control of his vehicle and hit a curb. He was then sent sailing over the on-ramp and came to rest on a patch of brush beside the freeway.
The biker was transported immediately to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition. According to the medical professionals assisting the biker, he sustained serious injuries and one of his legs had to be amputated.
Unfortunately, accidents like this are all too common. Due to their small size, motorcycles can be difficult to spot, especially when other drivers are not being vigilant. Bike riders lack the protective layer afforded by cars and trucks and even a minor collision or bump can cause them to be thrown from their bikes. As in this tragic instance, a biker may sustain serious injuries when this occurs.
Other motorists can help to reduce these incidents by taking special care to watch for bikers on the road. Before merging or turning, a driver should fully scan around their vehicle to make sure there is not a bike in their blind spot or approaching from another direction.
Additionally, motorcyclists should pay close attention to other travelers to make sure they see them when approaching. Far too many accidents occur when cars turn or merge onto roads and highways without checking for smaller vehicles.
