San Diego Gym Stairwell Collapse Under Investigation

A stairwell at a gym in the Barrio Logan community collapsed recently, injuring more than 24 people. Most of the injury victims were children. City of San Diego building inspectors went to work in the aftermath of the accident to determine exactly what caused the stairwell to collapse.

According to city officials, the accident occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. at Vault PK on Main Street. The building is a large warehouse that, in addition to the parkour gym, also has shared space with a CrossFit gym and a paintball facility. The accident happened during an open gym night for kids between five and 14 years old.

After the accident, 21 kids and two adults received medical attention for minor to moderate injuries. Several victims suffered spinal cord injuries when a 10-by-30 wooden platform fell on top of them. According to a representative from San Diego Fire Rescue, the accident could have been significantly worse than it was.

One parent suspected the stairwell collapsed because so many children had been running up and down it to get pizza. It was especially busy that evening due to a Groupon offering for open gym that night. Another parent said her child was unhurt, but was “devastated” by the sight of the accident.

Understanding premises liability

When an accident on public or private property causes serious injuries, it may call for a premises liability claim. The owners and operators of buildings must ensure their premises are “reasonably safe” for use by all invited guests. They must ensure there are no slippery surfaces, blocked walkways, broken handrails or other issues that have the potential to cause injury. If they are aware that dangerous conditions exist, they must take quick action to address the problem and warn guests about the dangers until repairs are completed.
