An accident occurred on Monday, December 15 when a suspected drunk driver in Alhambra crossed over a double yellow line in his pickup truck, hitting two minivans and causing one to crash into a group of pedestrians on a sidewalk. The pedestrians were looking at the Christmas lights lining the street at the time of the accident. Eleven total people ranging in age from 11 to 61 were taken to hospitals directly from the scene of the accident. Four were listed as being in critical condition.
A representative from the Alhambra police said that the driver blamed for the accident was put into custody. He was suspected to be drunk at the time of the accident, and was also transported to the hospital to be checked for minor injuries before being booked for a felony DUI charge.
The streets were particularly crowded with pedestrians on this day because there is a tradition on that block for residents to decorate their homes to the extreme, and many people like to walk up and down the block to look at them in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
When drivers get behind the wheel while under the influence, they are automatically considered negligent should they cause an accident. If it is proven that the driver of the pickup truck was indeed drunk behind the wheel, the pedestrians who were injured would all have a case to file a personal injury lawsuit against him to punish him for his negligence. Additionally, the driver would face the punishments that come with criminal charges for DUI in California.
